Community Paediatrics - Your Appointment
Appointments may last from 30 minutes to one and a half hours.
New patient appointments last around 45 minutes and follow up appointments are approximately 30 minutes. It will usually say on your appointment letter how long your appointment is expected to last. Because of the nature of the appointments, these may sometimes run late. Please bear with us when this happens: we aim to give all children and young people the time they and their families need.
At the first appointment, the doctor will ask you for information about:
- Your or others’ main concerns about your child
- Your child’s past medical and health information, including their birth, development
- Hospital admissions or illnesses, medications, allergies and immunisations
- How your child is getting on at school or nursery
- Who else is in the family or living at home and whether any support services have been needed e.g. children and young peoples services
Children are involved in this process as far as they are able to participate. Your child will be physically examined (in most cases) - we will measure height, weight and sometimes blood pressure and pulse.
The doctor will discuss their initial thoughts about the concerns you have. They will agree a plan with you, with respect to the next steps. This might include some of the following:
- Gather further specific information e.g. from school or other professionals who have already seen your child
- Signpost to services that can support you or your child with the concerns you have
- Signpost to more information about the possible cause of the concerns you have
- Ask (refer) other professionals to see your child to give additional information about the concerns you have
- Arrange further medical tests (e.g. blood test or scans) if appropriate
- Discuss possible role for medication
- Agree a review timescale and type of appointment
- Discharge from Community Paediatrics if our service is not needed
If you are a parent and want to have time to talk to the doctor without your child present please let us know when you book the appointment, so we can arrange this. If you are a young person or child and would like to talk to us without a parent present, this can be arranged too.
At review appointments (follow up appointments) we will review with you the progress or outcome of any interventions in the plan agreed at the previous appointment. We will agree the next steps with you.
