Neuro Muscular Conditions

We work with children and young people that have neuromuscular conditions such as; Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Spinal Muscular Dystrophy and Neuropathy. Please see NHS choices for more information on what these conditions are.

If you are a parent concerned your child may have a neuromuscular condition, please look at NHS choices, and then the best health professional to speak to is your GP to work out if testing is required.

If you or your child has been diagnosed with a neuromuscular condition - physiotherapy is main service with the CCHP involved in treating neuromuscular conditions.

For school age children with known neuromuscular conditions, the physiotherapy team aim to see you for an assessment within eighteen weeks on receipt of referral. Following an assessment, a programme for care, assessment of equipment needs and any necessary further referrals (e.g – Occupational Therapy) will be devised. Depending on your condition this will be reviewed 2-3 monthly.

For an acute episode of a neuromuscular condition, the physiotherapy team aim to see you within four weeks on receipt of referral. A six-week period of intervention of weekly or fortnightly treatment may include support to school staff, managing equipment needs and hydrotherapy. It will be reviewed as to whether this intensive programme needs to be continued or not at the end of the six weeks.
